Guidance on transition from BOS ISO 9001:2008 to BOS ISO 9001:2015 and from BOS ISO 14001:2004 to BOS ISO 14001:2015

The Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS) wishes to notify all interested and affected parties that the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published the two latest editions of its flagship standards being the ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 in September 2015. In relation to this, the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) has issued a joint communique with ISO, informing all parties that the agreed transition period for organizations implementing both the ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 shall be three (3) years from the date of publication of each one of these standards.

The ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 standards will no longer be valid after September 2018. No Organization will be certified against the ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 standards after September 2018, neither will any existing certifications based on these standards be recognized. This also means that Organizations that will be certified against ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 during the transition period will have their certificates valid only up to September 2018 irrespective of when they got certified.

In order to facilitate a smooth transition to the new standards and in recognition that the training on these standards is mainly geared towards supporting certification by organizations, BOBS wishes to inform its customers and potential customers that it:

 ·         Will continue to conduct courses based on ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 in order to assist organizations which still have to demonstrate compliance with these standards;

 ·         Is in the process of developing courses based on ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 standards. Organizations are advised to ensure that they develop competence relative and specific to the new standards, develop plans for managing the process and close the gaps between the old and the new standards, in order to facilitate a smooth change to the new standards and be prepared for certification audits against the new standards.

The decision to attend courses based on ISO 9001:2008 or ISO 14001:2004 will be for the customers to make, taking into account their particular situations. BOBS plans to have courses based on the new standards starting from April 2016. Courses based on the new standards and those based on the old standards will be available concurrently until the need for courses based on the old standards is no more, thereafter only courses based on the new standards will be offered.
