BOBS Commemorates World Metrology Day 2008
' Measurement in Sport '

Botswana Bureau of Standards joined the global community to commemorate the World Metrology Day 2008. The theme for this year ‘Measurement in Sport’ recognises the importance of reliable measurement in sport, in view of the fact that measurements are used to determine the outcome of a sporting event. As 2008 is the Olympic year, the accuracy of measurement are as important to the sports men and women, as a sport event such as 100m race can be lost by a hundredth of a second.

In commemorating this important day the BOBS soccer team (in blue) played against Geoflux soccer team (in white) on 17th May 2008   to create awareness on measurements relevance to sport: The pressure/mass of the soccer ball, the area (length and breadth) of the soccer pitch and of course referee’s watch (time)  are all important factors in a soccer match and therefore need to be measured accurately.BOBS won 6-5.

The day came, 20th May 2008, the Jwaneng Town known for its diamond mines uncovered new diamonds, the school children behind BOBS’ World Metrology Day banner. Students who are also sport persons and other invited participants paraded to create awareness on the importance of World Metrology Day.
